What they have in common
Both are native macOS apps built for the same job: record a screen demo and make it look like a professional edited it. Both add automatic cinematic zooms around what you're doing, smooth a shaky cursor into a glide, drop your capture onto a designed background with padding and shadow, frame a webcam, show keyboard shortcuts on screen, and mirror an iPhone or iPad over USB. Both generate captions from your voiceover. Neither runs on Windows.
So the choice isn't "which one has auto-zoom" — they both do. It's the two places they genuinely diverge: how you drive the edit, and what you can export.

Where Cadre leads
An agent does the edit. This is the one that matters. Cadre's editor is fully data-driven, so it exposes the whole timeline to an AI agent over a local MCP server. You finish recording and then just say what you want — "cut the dead air, zoom the terminal whenever I type, caption it, export for X" — and Claude Code makes the precise timeline edits and reports back what it changed. Screen Studio has no agent or public API surface; its editing is hands-on-keyboard in the app. If your workflow already runs through an agent, this is a genuinely different way to work, not a spec-sheet checkbox.
Captions run on your machine. Cadre transcribes your voiceover with Whisper locally — the audio never leaves the Mac. Both apps produce captions; Cadre is explicit that the transcription is on-device.
One plan, everything included. Cadre Pro is $120/year — or $50/month when you only need it for a single project. There's no cheaper-but-limited tier: every feature, including agent editing, is in both billing options.
Where Screen Studio leads
Being honest about this is the point of the page.
It's mature. Screen Studio has been shipping since 2022. That's years of polish, a large user base, an established template and effects library, and a track record Cadre simply doesn't have yet. If you want the safe, proven choice today, that's a real reason to pick it.
It exports more. Screen Studio renders GIFs and MP4 up to 4K 60fps. Cadre's active pipeline emits MP4 (H.264) at source, 720p or 1080p — no GIF, no explicit 4K60 mode today (more container formats are on Cadre's roadmap). If you need an optimized GIF or a 4K deliverable right now, Screen Studio does it and Cadre doesn't.
Automatic audio cleanup. Screen Studio removes background noise and normalizes levels automatically. Cadre gives you manual control over system, mic and music gains, but doesn't market an automatic noise-removal pass.
How the pricing really compares
We won't pretend Cadre is dramatically cheaper — it depends how you'd buy. Here are the figures, verified 19 July 2026; decide for yourself.
- Cadre: $120/year, one plan, everything included — or $50/month as a short-term project pass.
- Screen Studio: about $108/year billed yearly, or roughly $20/month month-to-month. A one-time "lifetime" licence (historically $229, bundling about a year of updates) is reportedly no longer sold to new buyers — existing owners keep theirs.
On annual billing the two are within a rounding error of each other. Month to month the comparison flips: Screen Studio's monthly (~$20) is well under Cadre's ($50) — Cadre's monthly exists as a project pass, not as the way to run the app long-term, and the yearly plan is the price that matters if you'll use it beyond a couple of months. If a proven app and GIF/4K export matter more to you than agent control, the ~$12/year gap is not the deciding factor — the feature differences are.

Choose Cadre if…
You already work in Claude Code or another agent and want to direct edits in plain language, you like a single flat price, and MP4 at up to 1080p covers your deliverables.
Choose Screen Studio if…
You want the most mature, battle-tested option today, you need GIF or 4K 60fps export, or automatic background-noise removal is a must-have for your recordings.
Neither, if…
You're on Windows. Both apps are macOS-only as of mid-2026, so a Windows user needs a different tool entirely.
